A Derby Double!
A stunning bay colt by an English Derby winner out of a mare who’s by a French Derby winner, no less. Bred in the purple and bred to improve as his 2yo & 3yo careers progress, he looks like a high-class recruit to the MPR & Charlie Johnston 2025 2-year-old ranks.
Despite being most remembered for winning the Epsom Derby, MASAR was a high class, Group winning, 7f 2-year-old who finished 3rd in the 2000 Guineas, ahead of his imperious Epsom downs, Group 1 winning, performance. Still a very young, nascent sire, he looks a perfect cross with the Lawman mare of this colt, who has, herself, already produced the highly rated BILL SILVERS, officially rated 96 and Racing Post rated 99.
We’ve enjoyed considerable success across the two generations of Kingsley Park maestros, namely, Mark & Charlie Johnston, with the likes of the Group 1 performers Marie’s Diamond & Lazy Griff, alongside the listed winner Dear My Friend to boot. We see no reason why this colt cannot emulate his illustrious predecessors, and, we feel he represents outstanding value at a hammer price of 48,000gns.
He qualifies for races like The Chesham Stakes, arguably the easiest Royal Ascot 2-year-old race to be competing in - in fact, it’s where our Group 3 winning, Charlie Johnston trained LAZY GRIFF, plied his trade - we’ll work back from there with this colt. It’s fair to say that his best days will be the other side of his Royal Ascot 2yo career and we can see him continuing to progress as he matures and steps up in trip throughout his career. If you think of some of the stayers that the Johnston’s have trained over the years, we’d be, we were firm of the belief' that he could nestle nicely into this sort of achievement bracket.
A likely 6f or 7f debutante in May or June of next year, the sky’s the limit for this regally bred individual.
He qualifies for the Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes where EDDIE'S BOY finished a fantastic third in 2022, and the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes, which we won this year with our The Dragon King. Read the full Racing Post article here: The Dragon King rules the Rowley Mile. The latter will be run over 7f from next year, Tattersalls have added an extra furlong to the race. Which will in particular suit this Masar colt.

Training Update (December): Richie reports that our colt is progressing really well. He has a great nature and is now also cantering away up the AW canter. A very straightforward colt. See for yourself below.
( We currently experiencing issues with YouTube, hopefully back working normal again tomorrow)
