Boxing Day Double

Fri 27 Dec 2024

Winner 96 of 2024: DENEMETHY, trained by Fergal O’Brien, and ridden by Jack Hogan (3). ‘Caspian Group Novices' Handicap Chase’ over 2m1f at Market Rasen.

It was a very misty Boxing Day at Market Rasen and seemingly across the UK, with inferior visibility. But the weather certainly didn’t stop our owners from travelling and enjoying extended Christmas celebrations. A winner of a point-to-point, as well as over hurdles, it was Denemethy’s only second attempt over the large obstacles, finishing a good 4th last time out. After a fantastic round of jumping, young Jack had him in a beautiful rhythm all the way, but with plenty of ground to make up after the eventual third had eluded the remaining participants when turning for home. But whilst Denemethy had taken another huge leap over the second last, the grey made a crucial mistake and left our now three-times winner in front with a clear lead over the last and was always finding enough to win comfortably by 1 ¾ lengths.

A delighted Jack Hogan spoke to Syndicate Manager Tom and owners in attendance after the race: “Wow, he gives you some feeling. His jumping was electric. The leader went a strong gallop, but I was always happy with our position in the race. He was in a lovely rhythm all the way, and I knew we would always catch the leader. He is a lovely prospect, with huge scope, who would have learned plenty last time out, and enjoyed today’s conditions. Well done everyone, a fantastic win from your horse."

Timeform rated his victory with a 114.

Read below, what Syndicate Manager Tom had to say after the race:

"Well done everyone. What a great way to round off the festivities. He jumped lovely, and has learnt plenty last time out at Exeter. Your jockey was delighted with the horse and was always confident to pick up the leading pair. His fantastic leaps over the last two fences, literally took us to the front, whilst the eventual third made a crucial mistake, loosing momentum as a result.  We probably hit the front a bit too early, which means he got a bit lonely in front and thought he had done enough, but with the second horse approaching, he picked himself up again and, in the end, won comfortably when crossing the line."

Winner 97 of 2024: MASHAAN, trained by Alice Haynes and ridden by Kieran O’Neill. ‘Win £1M With BetMGM's Golden Goals Handicap’ over 7f at Wolverhampton.

After an encouraging 4th last time out in Lingfield, we were hopeful of another good run from the 6-year-old for his trainer Alice, who is operating in great form. Drawn wide in stall 11, the pair jumped well and Kieran did well to get across into a prominent position. Despite doing very strong fractions early in the race, he pressed the leader when turning for home and stayed on best to win cosily in the end.

Timeform rated his victory with a t59+, commenting: "Back up in trip, stepped up on the form of his run at Lingfield just 4 days earlier to gain a first success since March 2022; raced wide, prominent, shaken up over 2f out, edged ahead final 1f."
