Winner 89 of 2024: BOBBY BENNU, trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Jack Mitchell.‘Gamble Responsibly At BetMGM Handicap’ over 7f at Lingfield.
After some great winning form on the turf earlier this year, Bobby Bennu showed he could translate his form to the Tapeta surface with a more than creditable 2nd place, giving weight to the winner, last time out. He broke in his usual smart fashion yesterday, with Jack Mitchell settling him nicely in a first-time hood behind the leading pair, who set a strong pace. Pushed along when turning for home, Bobby disputed the lead and was clear inside the last furlong. He was always doing enough and won in the manner of a horse, that might just be better than the raw margin.
An incredible 3rd victory, from only 7 runs, having been second twice and never out of the prizemoney on all his other runs. Well done Bobby!

Timeform rated his victory with a p105+, saying: "Has some solid winning form on turf, but he's taken his form up another notch in all-weather handicaps of late and went one better than at Southwell in a first-time hood; chased leader, pushed along over 2f out, led over 1f out, closed down late on, always holding on; still lightly raced, he looks sure to go well again."
Jack Mitchell spoke to the owners post-race:: "I was keen to get him out and sit prominently, the leader went pretty hard, which allowed me to relax, and once he did just that, he felt a brilliant, you can put him anywhere in a race, once he drops his head. Downhill, we went through the gears, just to assure the leader doesn't get away from us. He hit the line strong, is in great form and it’s fantastic to see him back in the winner's enclosure."
