Big Improver? - born 13th May foal 2022
7th fastest in the race to the winning post, it perplexed us to learn, from the sale’s results, that he was the 103rd most expensive through the ring, at €67,000. He looks outstanding value to us! We’re pretty sure, were he by a sire such as Justify, Wootton Bassett, Lope De Vega etc, his auction price would have soared, yet none of these sires’ progenies have achieved anything comparable to those of INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, however, he seems to be pigeonholed as a less fashionable sire than these contemporaries - we think the market’s got it wrong - 7th quickest doesn’t equate to 103rd most expensive, in our opinion!

Last year, we purchased, from Knockanglass Stables - Malc who finished 2nd in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot - Red Zone Hero who won two races, including one under Ryan Moore at The St Leger festival, before being sold to race in Hong Kong for multiple times the figure we paid for him and The Coffee Pod, who recouped almost all of his purchase price in one hit, with his York victory in September - Thomond O’Mara’s Knockanglass Stables has proved a very happy hunting ground, for us, in the past.
Watch his breeze, here:
Thomond said at Saturday’s Arqana Sale: “My breeze up horses have been under a cloud for most of the Breeze Ups season, I don’t know what’s been ailing them, but they’ve just been underwhelming in their breezes, not producing what I thought they would, but I’m happy to say that, this week, in Arqana, they’re starting to come right and show, on the track, what they’ve been showing me at home.” He inferred there’d be continued improvement from his horse, so who knows what his finishing position would have been, were the race to have been held in a couple of weeks’ time?
Thomond continued, “he’s all speed this lad, 5f is his trip. Look, I’m not saying he’s a Windsor Castle horse, it’s probably too tight a turnaround to get him to Royal Ascot now, but, he’s that sort of horse from what I’ve seen at home and there’ll be more improvement to come”.
Thomond has never let us down in the past, so we’re happy to take him at his word, especially, given, it’s backed up by the clock.
If you have a horse that’s “all speed”, where better to send him, than Robert ‘King Of The Sprints’ Cowell’s, Newmarket yard? Robert has trained half a dozen horses for us now, with the lowest rated still achieving a rating of 89 - and who happens to have won 3 of his last 4 races and will probably usurp that, in time - the others were all rated in the 90’s and 100’s, including a track record holder with a Timeform rating, in his pomp, of 119 - Stats like these, most owners and trainer teams can only dream of.
To put it succinctly we think he’s a festival horse of the future, who represents outstanding value.
(In the image gallery you can see some photos of him as a foal at The Irish National Stud. where he was foaled in the same box as the legendary Sea The Stars!)
