Super Soumi Samedi
Sun 22 Sep 2024
Winner 71 of 2024: LAZY GRIFF, trained by Charlie Johnston and ridden by Christophe Soumillon. 'Group 3, Prix de Conde' over 9f at Chantilly.
Last month, Lazy Griff travelled to the picturesque seaside village of Deauville to finish a good 3rd in the listed class Criterium du FEE. Returning to France, he was well supported in the market, despite a field of many lightly raced 2-year-olds, with the likes of the eventual third, an unbeaten Aga Khan homebred daughter of Sea the Moon, Shandana. But our son of Protectionist made good use of his experience and controlled the race from the start, before kicking to a 2-length advantage of the field, a furlong from home. The only serious concern came from the fast-finishing 2nd Gezora, but Lazy Griff kept finding for his jockey, to run out a very comfortable, eased down winner. An impressive performance from our 75.000€ BBAG Germany yearling purchase who is now likely to head for a Group 1 no less, next time out. A hugely exciting horse for connections.

A very complimentary Christophe Soumillon spoke to the press after the race: "He looked really well and gave me a great feel going down, so I had a lot of confidence beforehand. He travelled well, the idea was not to to be caught for speed so I went and after the hill he picked up nicely again. I won with a hand ride, so I imagine he can do even better and the entourage will very probably think about coming back for the Group 1 Criterium de Saint Cloud."
Timeform rated his success with a 102.
"They don’t call him Super Soumi for no reason, do they?" - Tim Palin spoke to the Racing Post shortly after the race : "Lazy Griff by name but not by nature."

Winner 72 of 2024: JENNI, trained by David O'Meara and ridden by Ben Robinson. 'Jordan Electrics Handicap' over 7f at Ayr.
A massive Thank you to Ayr Racecourse, who accommodated and welcomed more than 176 of our owners over the last three days. A total of 17 runners competed in 12 races, and collected an incredible £68,758 in price money between them. Uncle Don caught the eye in the listed class 'Harry Rosebery Stakes', when sweeping the field late, to finish a very close 2nd after 76 days off the track. Fan-favourite and Epsom Dash 2nd Silky Wilkie outran his odds to finish 2nd in an incredible 1-2-3 for Karl Burke in the Ayr Gold Cup, and took his earnings beyond £250k. In the penultimate race, Jenni managed to pull off a rather marvellous end to a very successful week at the 'Western Meeting' at Ayr. Placed in five of her last 6th starts, the ultra consistent daughter of Mehmas was overdue a full success. Despite her 2nd place only 7 days ago at Musselburgh, she only went off 10/1. Jenni jumped well and sat prominent in second, always on the heels of the leading horse. The winning pair disputed the lead when turning for home, faced a challenge by the eventual second but kept on and was always doing enough to win comfortably by 1/2 length.

Timeform rated her victory with a 83, saying: "Is unexposed at 7f and improved form to get off the mark, always having enough up to her sleeve to repel the runner-up inside the final 1f; prominent, went with zest, shaken up approaching 2f out, went on soon after, kept on well."
