Super Saturday brings a hat-trick of wins
Sun 22 Jul 2018
We are pinching ourselves at MPR today, as we review not just Saturday's treble, but Friday's double and a phenomenal 18 winners in July alone! Combine this with adding that these include a Group 3 and a Listed race and you can see why we are little overwhelmed.
We began Saturday hoping we could get to our 50th winner and ICE COLD IN ALEX duly obliged at The Curragh. He gained revenge for being impeded in his previous race and this time got the win, under regular jockey Niall McCullagh for Ken Condon. Ironically 'Alex' was also our 50th winner in 2017 at the same meeting, which we all think is rather spooky!
We then saw MARIE'S DIAMOND contest the GROUP 3 ANGLESEY STAKES at The Curragh and he went off third favourite. A strong pace was set by one of the two Aidan O'Brien horses which went 5 lengths clear in the 6.5f race, but jockey James Doyle wasn't going to let this lead grow, so pushed Marie's Diamond along 2 furlongs out and proved the stronger of the other runners who couldn't catch him, hitting the front in the final 200 yards to deny Viadera by 1/2 a length.
Congratulations to the whole team behind this deserved success. Read the story, which includes the thoughts of syndicate manager Mike and James Doyle and also see the replay on At The Races here: http://www.attheraces.com/news/2018/July/21/marie%E2%80%99s-diamond-proves-an-anglesey-jewel-at-the-curragh
He really has been a super 2 year old for his syndicate. He has now won twice what we paid for him at Tattersalls and seems to just be still improving! He has been given an entry in the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at The Curragh: https://www.racingpost.com/racecards/178/curragh/2018-08-26/707907
One of his owners who was present summed up the victory beautifully: "What a wonderful day at the Curragh racing with MPR. One of the proudest and most special days of my life with a whole host of memories to cherish for a lifetime. A big thankyou to everyone at MPR and to Sam and Mark at MJR racing for looking after Marie's Diamond so well. Yet again he won the best turned out prize.!! What a gorgeous and talented horse he is. Well done to all my fellow owners seeing their horse winning the Anglesey Stakes and following in the footsteps of some of the most illustrious names in racing. Days like this just can't be bought!"
Then at Lingfield in the evening, we saw a hat-trick of wins for the Sir Mark Prescott trained TIMOSHENKO. He has been thrilling his owners by winning all three of his races this month and it was lovely to see so many there to support their horse (see the gallery). It was announced that he had won in a track record time, which had stood since 1989 and Luke Morris even had time to check the screen in the final furlong to see how far ahead he was (it was by 3.5 lengths!)
Well done to all winning owners yesterday. What a day!!!
Here are our stats for 2018 so far (as of today):
18 winners in July with £311,435 of prize money, including a Listed and Group 3 win
2018 = 52 winners (14 by 2 year olds) and £759,258 of prize money
We have had 7 doubles and 2 trebles in 2018!
We are extremely grateful to all our trainers, jockeys and stable staff for all their hard work and of course to our owners for their support.
