Not so lazy
Wed 31 Jul 2024
Winner 58 of 2024: Lazy Griff, trained by Charlie Johnston and ridden by Joe Fanning. 'Keith Walker Never Change Your Mind Memorial EBF Novice Stakes' over 7 1/2 f.
Bought as a yearling at the BBAG, the very good-looking son of the late Protectionist finished an eye catching second on debut before taking his chance in the listed class Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Back to novice company, he jumped out of the stalls very well, which allowed Joe Fanning to dispute the lead. Turning for home, the eventual runner-up started his strong challenge but Lazy Griff showed a fantastic attitude and after a battle in the final furlong, he was not to be denied to win by ½ lengths.

Timeform rated his first victory with a 79+, saying: "Had been given a much bigger break between races than when last seen in the Chesham 6 weeks earlier and took a small step forward to confirm debut promise at the second attempt (winner of that race had finished second in the Vintage earlier in the afternoon), proving his effectiveness on ground firmer than good; made all, pushed along 2f out, tackled over 1f out, asserted final 100 yds, stayed on well; he's sure to be suited by at least 1m, which offers an avenue for more progress."

Syndicate Manager Mike says: "His maiden form got a massive boost with the winner finishing second in the Vintage Stakes only 20 minutes prior, so we went into the race fairly confident. But with the eventual runner up having been very fancied in the market after his victory last time out, we knew it wasn't going to be straightforward. Lazy Griff has shown great tenacity as well as ability to set the pace early on, and battle in the closing stages as tough as he did. A fantastic effort on his only third run. He looks an exciting prospect. Well done to all his owners."
