Haydock Heaven for Cold Stare
Sun 08 Aug 2021
WINNER 60 OF 2021: COLD STARE, trained by David O'Meara and ridden by Danny Tudhope: 'The Mansionbet Beaten by a Head Handicap' over 7f at Haydock.
It might not be usual to hope for rain in the summer months, but when it comes to underfoot conditions for Cold Stare, the muddier the better! It was indeed 'an umbrella day' yesterday afternoon, but his owners don't mind putting on their waterproofs when it comes to watching him race.
Carrying top weight, he was back at a track where he has won twice in testing ground. Steadied at the start, he settled towards the rear of midfield. Going easily, Danny waited for room in the home straight and just switched him left as he made good headway. Taking the lead over 1f out, he faced a challenge towards the finish, but just held on to win by a neck.

"He loves these conditions, this is where he's at his best and he's ploughed through the ground," said winning jockey Danny Tudhope. Timeform rated it as a 98 performance, a joint career best, saying: "Had everything come right for him, in a lower grade than he usually operates in, with the ground in his favour and at a track he goes well at and he turned in best effort of the season to resume winning ways from 4 lb lower than he defied last year; slowly into stride, held up, smooth headway over 2f out, led approaching final 1f, driven out; he'll remain of interest when the mud is flying.”

Syndicate manager Mike says: "I was delighted to see him do that, it has been a trying season getting the right race and conditions for him and to do it on a Saturday with many of his loyal owners in attendance to applaud him and Danny back into the winners enclosure was tremendous. Well done to them and to David, Danny and the team at home. It seemed fitting that Cold Stare; who we can describe as a #TeamMPR stalwart, brought up our 60th winner of the year.”
