The Rise of the Battalion

Tue 15 Oct 2024

Winner 82 of 2024: PALS BATTALION, trained by David O’Meara and ridden by Danny Tudhope. ‘Download The Racecourse App Raceday Ready 'Confined' Handicap’ over 6f at Wolverhampton.

After hitting the crossbar several times this year. Pals Battalion, in first-time visor, finally had a turn of luck and was back in the winner’s enclosure last night. Drawn in 10, a typical cool Danny Tudhope made an early decision to settle in the rear of the field, where he was travelling well throughout the race and picked up nicely turning for home. He stayed on strongly to win comfortably by 1 ½ lengths with the fast-finishing Ziggy’s Queen in 3rd.

Timeform rated his victory with a t83, saying: "In a first-time visor, showed improved form as he got off the mark for the season in ready fashion back down in trip, the concern being however he looked even more errant under pressure; held up, travelled well, forced wide home turn, headway over 1f out, led when hung badly left last ½f, straightened up and merely pushed out."

Syndicate Manager Mike said post race: "What a brilliant win by Pals Battalion. This was a career best performance, on both, the Racing Post and Timeform. The visor did the job, and he was more straightforward inside the last furlong, despite being drawn wide. He deserved to get his head in front, he has been incredibly consistent for most of the year without winning, and to do it in such a manner is great for his owners. And of course, there could be more to come."
