Quay Item

The next Shishkin?
The thoroughly progressive Quay Item has come up against two very smart performers in each of his two outings to date, and acquitted himself very creditably against them. Making his debut at Ballindenisk, he finished the race out strongly to take the third position in the dying strides in a race that was won by the top-priced gelding from the point-to-point fields last season to be sold at public auction, with the £400,000 seller Minella Premier. He stepped forward from it on his return this season at Curraghmore, where he showed great battling qualities, in what looked to be a strong maiden. Running right to the line, he came through to take the second position, with the winner selling for another significant sum privately, he now looks to have a bright future under rules.
Standing at an imposing 16.3 hands, being by Sholokov, the same sire as the great Shishkin, as well as Bob Olinger, and Don Cossack, and out of a Presenting mare he is a lovely, scopey horse who has chaser written all over him. A thoroughly athletic and lose moving individual he got a big tick from the most notable agent in the National Hunt game, Anthony Bromley of Highflyer Bloodstock. Given the resemblance to the six time Grade 1 winner, the master of Seven Barrows, Nicky Henderson was incredibly taken by him at the sales and given he trains the aforementioned Minella Premier this fella soon appeared towards the very top of his list, so it was a case of the stars aligning between all parties.
Nicky is hugely excited to see him over fences when the time comes but he’ll be providing owners with plenty of thrilling days before then. Do rest assured though, he isn’t a horse who we would be waiting around for, he’ll slot into the Seven Barrows string right away, and whilst plans remain fluid as to where we’ll start him, he should be up to making his debut in the near future. He could either start in a bumper or indeed straight over hurdles, hopefully culminating in some festival appearances, this is something we’ll establish as Nicky learns about him.
Given the unexplainable amounts of money that point to pointers are changing hands for at the moment and given the form he has in the book, the sheer stamp of the individual and the trainer he’s heading to, we feel that this fella, who was purchased from the Cheltenham November P2P Sale for only £45,000, represents exceptional value.
