Michael and David Easterby
For over half a century Mick Easterby has trained champion racehorses from his yard at Sheriff Hutton, north of York. Mick Easterby has often been described as a 'legend', famed for his shrewd placement of horses and unsurpassed knowledge of every aspect of racing. Over the years he has sent out literally thousands of winners from his Sheriff Hutton stables.
Famous winners include the Classic winning filly Mrs McArdy (1000 Guineas), sprinters Wiganthorpe (Gimcrack Stakes) and Lochnager (Champion sprinter), middle distance pattern winner Gentleman's Deal (Winter Derby) and most recently Hoof It (Stewards Cup 2011 and Stewards Sprint 2016) and Hoofalong (Scottish Sprint Cup). Famous jumpers have included Mr Snugfit and Triumph Hurdle winner Peterhof.
All of the horses are treated as individuals. "Racehorses have different training needs which must be satisfied in order to get the best out of them. Every horse at the stables is important and we give each one it's own page on our website."
Located in the scenic North Yorkshire countryside surrounding the village of Sheriff Hutton, the horses are trained on sand and plastic gallops, with access to gallops of different surfaces, depths and gradients. These gallops emulate the all weather tracks of Lingfield Park and Chelmsford City and also varying conditions on traditional grass surfaces. "The stiff uphill gallops provide a testing workout for our horses and are important in building up stamina so they are never found wanting at the end of their races! Giving the horses a good workout at home ensures they arrive at the racecourse race fit and ready to run!"
From June 7th 2021, the trainers licence will be in joint names. They say: "We are delighted to announce our new joint training licence, as from today the stable will be known as Michael and David Easterby Racing. In all honesty nothing much will change, but David is now formally recognised on the training licence. Horses will now run under the banner "Michael and David Easterby" and our first runner will be Calcutta Dream at Wetherby tomorrow. We are delighted to announce our new joint training licence, as from today the stable will be known as Michael and David Easterby Racing."
