Motawaafeq Motors To Victory!
Mon 18 Jan 2021
WINNER 4 OF 2021: MOTAWAAFEQ, trained by Mick Appleby and ridden by Alistair Rawlinson, in 'The Bombardier March To Your Own Drum Handicap' over 7f at Southwell.
Going back to 7 furlongs, his outside draw in 12 was a concern. But he broke well and by the time the bend came, he was in third and tracked the two leaders on the outer. Alistair asked him for the extra effort at the 2f pole and he responded well to see off the challengers to win by a length, pricking his ears on the line.

Timeform say: "Has done well since returning to fibresand and resumed winning ways back down in trip; raced wide, in touch, led over 1f out, stuck to task; will continue to give a good account." They have also increased his rating to 85.
Simon Mapletoft, the Sky Sports Racing reporter, selected him before the off, saying that he looked well. His win maintains the super form of Mick Appleby at the top of the All-Weather trainers championship, going for a fifth title and giving him a double on the day. Well done Mick and team.
Simon interviewed Alistair post race and he said: "He has the speed and travelled strongly. I knew once we got up with the leaders we would stay there. We have found the key to him and he could go on from here - mentally he's a big baby and just wants to go fast, but I leave it to him and keep a good hold!"
Syndicate manager Tim says: "Congratulations to his owners and credit to Mick for bringing him down to 7f as he has the tactical speed. The tempo of the race suited him and he had a great head carriage in the final furlong. We'll keep him to Southwell over 7 and there's a race coming up for him on February 4th that we'll look at. He's in great form in his last three runs - 1st, 2nd and 1st, so well done to his syndicate of owners. We can celebrate having four winners already this year too, in fact 50% of our runners so far this year have been 1st or 2nd. That's what owners want - to be able to cheer home their horses and enjoy 'the ride'!"
