Got To Love Black Type

Tue 19 Mar 2024

WINNER 19 OF 2024: GOT TO LOVE A GREY, trained by Karl Burke and ridden by Sam James: The feature LISTED 'Prix Ronde De Nuit' over 1,100m/5.5f at Chantilly.

We bought the daughter of Dark Angel privately from Aguiar Bloodstock as a 2 year old. She won on debut and then followed that up, winning the Listed Marygate Stakes at York, with a creditable 5th in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot on her third start. She had a set back following that race and this was her first race back after a 271 day break, with the ground at Chantilly, described as 'heavy.'

Third in the betting behind the Group 2 Criterium De Maisons-Laffitte and Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge winners, she did look fit and well in the paddock.

Breaking sharply, she was immediately to the fore. Shaken up, she took the lead 2f out and was hard pressed in the final furlong. She ran on very gamely though and asserted towards the finish, being pushed out, to win by 1 and a 1/2 lengths.

Watched on by 5 of her owners and their guests, she was cheered back into the paddock and celebrations lasted into the night!

Timeform rated it as a career best 102 performance, with their comments to follow.

Here you can read an interview with her syndicate manager, Mike Prince who talks about potential plans for her: https://www.jourdegalop.com/2024/03/got-to-love-a-grey-pose-une-serieuse-option-sur-le-sigy/ (The Group 3 Prix Sigy, is over course and distance on April 15th.)

Mike goes on to say: "Well done to her owners and what a fantastic training performance by Karl. To win on that ground after a 271 day break, pulling away from proven black type winners, is a tremendous way to start her programme. Thanks to Sam for the ride also - they clearly click, as he has ridden her for all three of her victories!"
